As summer draws to a close, the games industry is just gearing up for its busiest season of the year. With new releases arriving soon, new app stores, and of course new funding, there’s lots to get excited about!
Here is the most important gaming and adtech news from August.
GAMING
Industry: Newzoo’s Global Games Market Report for 2024 is now live, and found the global market will generate $187.7 billion this year. For our local readers, they also teamed up with PayPal and published the Advance in Germany’s World of Gaming – be sure to check that out!
Games: Find out what the most anticipated mobile games releases are here.
App Stores: The long-awaited release of the Epic Games Store is here! But there’s a catch – for iOS users, the app store is only available in the EU for now. AltStore PAL is now free, thanks to a grant from Epic Games. Epic’s most popular games, Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League Sideswipe have been released on the AltStore PAL, but still only available to EU iOS users.
Funding: Grafana Labs, the company that’s probably been mentioned at least once at your workplace today, announced they raised $270 million. The company is now valued at over $6 billion.
ADTECH
AI: With ever-rising concerns about the role of AI in intellectual property, the startup Story announced new funding for a “blockchain designed to prevent artificial intelligence makers… from taking creators’ intellectual property without permission.”
Privacy Laws: The UK’s competition authority announced they ended probes into Apple and Google, due to administrative priorities. The victory will be short, however, as the authority added they will use incoming powers to “resolve app store concerns”.
