Sabrina Mügge, User Acquisition Lead, started at exmox in January 2023, and since then has successfully built a marketing team that played a large role in the fast growth of the company. In this interview, she shares her experiences in developing this team, what she’s learned about leadership and management, and gives valuable insights into what makes performance marketing an exciting and engaging career.

As Team Lead, how do you split your time between managing people and working on tasks?

I still do some hands-on work, which I enjoy because we’re a small company. It’s a good mix of managing people and being involved in operational tasks. I spend about 15% of my time on operational work, but I prefer the strategic aspect of my role. My role is very data-driven so I spend a lot of time looking into numbers to get a good understanding of the current situation and action items to be created based on that.

How do you spend a typical day at work?

My days consist of many moving parts. The biggest part of my role is ensuring everything user acquisition related is running smoothly, which is why I have a lot of meetings to sync with my team and between departments. We have our weekly team meetings where we do a deep-dive into performance and also a meeting together with our marketing artists to discuss creatives that we’re developing and running in our campaigns. As we’re a growing company, there are a lot of different topics and projects that quickly come up that become a priority.

Right now, we are also working on growing the team, so a big part of my role is collaborating with our HR team to find candidates that are the best fit for our expanding department.

What are some of your fundamental leadership values?

Trust is crucial in leadership. Micromanagement doesn’t pay off in the long run. Trust is an essential pillar within a team, which is why hiring people that match your team is so important. Building a team that complements everyone’s different personalities is essential, and also fostering and encouraging open communication between team members is something that really contributes to a team’s success.

I’ve really enjoyed learning from my team as well as ensuring everyone is motivated and aligned with our goals.

A crucial aspect of leadership is recognizing people’s strengths and what they enjoy doing. I try to align projects with skills and what people enjoy, as well as what will motivate them.

What is your favorite memory at exmox?

My favorite memories are the ones I made with the team and partners, mostly at conferences and other industry events. During these types of events you get the chance to meet new people, learn, and network a lot which is really valuable.

Do you have a favorite project that you’ve worked on?

Overall I really enjoy projects that involve multiple departments and benefit our team and the rest of the company. Getting to collaborate with the partnerships department to align on our partner’s goals is also very rewarding.

In your opinion, what makes exmox special?

As probably everyone says, the people. I like my team a lot and am really proud of them. Our HR Manager, Julia, does a great job of hiring people; she really finds people with a good heart and that’s very important to me. People work together, help and support each other, and I think that is a great foundation for teamwork.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to work in user acquisition or transition to performance marketing?

First off, user acquisition is a super interesting field! I wouldn’t work in it otherwise, because I get bored easily and this job is not boring at all! It involves a lot of analytical work, but also creative thinking. Good communication skills and a strategic mindset are essential.

If you enjoy data-driven decision-making and creativity, I highly recommend this career path.

What are some of your goals for the rest of the year?

Our goal is to continue to grow the user base of our apps by delivering more users. We aim to take exmox to the next level by expanding in various regions, which is super exciting. Team-wise, I want to keep focusing on growing, developing, and learning from each other.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I’m really happy I joined exmox. I had been previously working in this industry, but joining exmox was the perfect next step.

I’m super thankful that exmox gave me the chance to build up a team and be a part of this growth journey. I’ve also grown personally a lot.

As I said, I get bored easily and I have never been bored at exmox – and I don’t think I will get bored anytime soon!
